Doing crimes is bad and in fact, often quite dumb. What’s even dumber though is committing a crime and then calling the police to report it while it’s still ongoing. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what one Florida woman allegedly did.
That woman is 37-year-old Christie Lee Turman who phoned the police to report the theft of a Toyota Corolla. What took the 911 dispatcher by surprise was that Turman dubbed herself the thief. “I’m trying to steal a car that’s not legally mine. So, y’all better come make a report,” she said in the recording of the call.

The operator responds “I’m reporting this.” That’s where bodycam footage from the police in the area becomes vital. In it, we see officers confronting Turman, arresting her, and discussing the situation with her. Evidently, she claims that she was participating in “a game of Black Ops” but it’s not totally clear what she meant by that. Local reports from the Charlotte Observer suggest that she thought she could make the crime legal by reporting it herself.
Of course, that isn’t what happened. Instead, she went to jail for the sixth time since 2005. Officers on the scene found no other issues aside from an Audi A5 with an open door at the Port Meyers Cadillac dealer where this all happened.
It’s unclear at this stage what Ms. Turman’s thinking truly was. Authorities haven’t mentioned in their reporting if she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. But, if she was of sound mind, then why did she attempt to steal a car and call the police to report it herself?
Regardless of the answers, it turns out that the phone call might have proven beneficial for Turman. Since she never left with the Toyota, she’s only facing a single charge of trespassing. Of course, if she’d simply not tried to steal the car she’d be facing zero charges.
